SINAN
(Sintang · West Kalimantan · Borneo)
Borneo is often treated as a single aromatic identity.
It isn’t.
The island spans an immense landscape, and each region carries its own expression.
Among them, Sintang has long been recognised by collectors for a profile that is unmistakably green, resinous and remarkably refined.
This project began almost two years ago.
Rather than building a distillation around a single purchase, the wood was assembled gradually, piece by piece, waiting only for material of the same exceptional standard. Only then did it become worthy of a distillation.
Every mesOUD oil begins with the same philosophy.
In the world of oud, the finest pieces of wood are traditionally reserved for incense, while oil is distilled from what remains. We approach it differently.
For me, the oil is the destination, not the by product.
The wood chosen for a mesOUD distillation is the same calibre of material that many collectors would prefer to keep for heating or burning.
Not because it produces more oil,it doesn’t.
In practical terms, its yield differs little from ordinary shaving grade material, which is leftover material from cleaning the true incenses
Its value lies elsewhere.
It lies in the depth, complexity and articulation it is capable of expressing.
From there, the responsibility belongs entirely to the distillation.
Exceptional material deserves exceptional restraint.
Every mesOUD distillation is carried out in my custom built copper system, designed around selectivity rather than efficiency.
Guided by patience, experience and craftsmanship, the process allows every aromatic facet to emerge in its own time, preserving the separation, clarity and precision that define what i call the Soul of Oud.
To me, Soul of Oud is the moment when every nuance retains its own identity, every transition unfolds naturally, and the character of the wood remains transparent from beginning to end.
The distillation lasted twenty days, not because twenty days is a target, but because that is what this particular wood required.
Sinan opens with green pear, lush tropical foliage and delicate orchid. Bright balsamic resin gradually reveals succulent green facets, a restrained purple diesel nuance, green candied apple and a gentle kinamic warmth through the drydown.
Despite its complexity, the composition remains remarkably transparent and composed, allowing each note to exist without obscuring another.
This is not my interpretation of Sintang.
It is simply my most faithful expression of it.
